BUILDING A BETTER DELAWARE

BANKS HELP BUILD A BETTER DELAWARE BY:

Anticipating and responding to the needs of our communities

Delaware’s banking industry has changed dramatically over the years. Today, the industry’s responsibilities extend far beyond the traditional business of saving and lending. Delaware banks help teach, protect, and reach throughout the community to provide financial education, safeguards, and opportunities to everyone.

Through community outreach and special lending programs, the banking industry helps ensure that homeownership, investment, and borrowing opportunities are available to all our neighbors. Delaware is one of the leading states in home ownership. By developing financial fraud and abuse prevention programs, the industry continues to meet the safety and security needs of all our customers. By establishing strict guidelines on the use of personal information, the industry is fulfilling the commitment of security and trust that it has pledged throughout its history. And through financial literacy and economic education programs, the industry has worked to teach children and adults the keys to personal financial success. Supporting organizations like Junior Achievement, and programs such as Bank in School, Teach Children to Save Day, and various mentoring initiatives, Delaware’s banking industry strives to ensure that financial education is available to everyone. Delaware’s banks are particularly proud of their co-sponsorship of the Newark High School pilot program Survival in the 21st Century Financial World for juniors and seniors that may soon be offered in high schools throughout the State.

In these ways, Delaware’s banks are pleased to meet the challenges and to support the efforts ensuring that financial opportunities and independence are available to everyone in all of our communities.

Providing jobs

In 1982, 4,500 people worked in Delaware’s banking industry. Today, banking ranks as the largest non-agricultural private industry employer in Delaware and the number of banking jobs has grown more than seven fold since 1982 to over 32,000, comprising almost 8% of Delaware’s non-agricultural workforce. Additionally, Delaware’s banking industry indirectly generates over 26,000 other jobs in Delaware’s construction, manufacturing, retail, service, real estate, and other employment sectors.2 banking jobs has grown more than seven fold since 1982 to over 32,000, comprising almost 8% of Delaware’s non-agricultural workforce.
